Types of Electric Duct Heaters

At Indeeco we have three different types of electric duct heaters, this includes our finned tubular heater, explosion-proof & corrosion resistant heater, and our open coil heater. Depending on your needs, our heaters can be custom designed from the most simple to the most sophisticated of systems. Take a look at the types of duct heaters we have to offer.

Finned Tubular Electric Duct Heater

The finned tubular element is isolated from the air by insulation and a metal sheath. The coil is centered with in a stainless steel tube, this tube is filled with granular magnesium oxide. A stainless steel fin is round onto the tube in order to increase the

surface’s heat transfer. The use of stainless steel was chosen because of it’s resistance to corrosion and moisture. Finned Tubular heaters are safe from shock hazard, easy to service in the unlikely event of element failure, and can withstand more abuse since the elements are enclosed in a grounded metal sheath.

Explosion-Proof and Corrosion Resistant Heater

For use in hazardous areas where explosive dusts and gases are present and where corrosion and moisture exist, Indeeco offers explosion-proof and corrosion resistant heaters. There are some requirements to consider if choosing this kind of duct heater. The surface temperature of the heating equipment can’t exceed the ignition temperature of the hazardous atmosphere. The correct NEC Ignition Temperature Code should be specified (see chart below). Also ensure that all spark and arc producing control devices are isolated from the hazardous atmosphere or are placed in an enclosure that can withstand the pressure of a potential explosion. Lastly all electrical supply connections must be up to NEC and local code requirements for hazardous locations.

Open Coil Electric Duct Heater

Most simple space heating applications use open coil design. Open coil elements release heat directly into the air stream which results in a cooler running coil. An open coil is produced by mechanically crimping stainless steel into terminals using a calibrated tool. This type of heater is more economical in a low KW application, but due to manufacturing costs finned tubular heaters are more economical for high KW applications.

When choosing your duct heater keep in mind the 80% rule which states that the heater should occupy at least 80% of the inside area. Indeeco has no limitation on the maximum size of custom heater assemblies, however individual UL listed heaters need to follow maximum and minimum requirements.
